Summary of The James Bond Collection, Volume 2:

The second grab bag of 007 adventures features three Bonds in five films, including the legendary movie that started it all. In 1962 Sean Connery defined the cinematic James Bond as a tough, charming, and thoroughly professional cold war spy with a license to kill in the lean, hard-edged Dr. No. With Ursula Andress (as the original Bond girl Honey Ryder, who makes her entrance in a bikini), Bond battles a renegade supervillain with little more than his wits, his cunning, and his Walther PPK (this was before Q armed him with the coolest toys a superspy ever had). George Lazenby, a handsome Australian model with a self-effacing confidence, made his first and only appearance as James Bond in the underrated On Her Majesty’s Secret Service, a witty and action-packed adventure that makes 007 history when Bond marries the girl (the lovely and talented Diana Rigg, fresh from her duties as the butt-kicking spy on the TV series The Avengers). Roger Moore brought a light tone and a suave assurance to the series as the third Bond, and the set features three of his seven appearances. In The Man with the Golden Gun, he battles million-dollar assassin Christopher Lee, one of Bond’s most magnetic adversaries. The Spy Who Loved Me, perhaps Moore’s finest hour, is a return to the extravagant set pieces and cold war thrills of Connery’s pictures and introduces Richard Kiel’s steel-dentured Jaws to the series. Jaws returns as a comic figure in Moonraker, a misguided sci-fi entry that takes Bond to space for a physically impressive but dramatically lackluster adventure. More of a mixed bag than the initial seven-film James Bond Gift Set, this set is aimed at the Bond completist rather than the general fan. The DVD editions of the films each feature audio commentary by the director and key members of the crew, “making of” documentaries, and a host of stills, TV spots, and trailers. –Sean Axmaker

Summary of The Naked Gun 33 1/3 - The Final Insult:

The usual way of the world is that sequels amount to thinner and thinner carbon copies of the original. But not in the case of Naked Gun movies, which only seemed to get funnier with each new entry. This third episode in the series finds Lieutenant Frank Drebin (Leslie Nielsen) retired from his police squad and married to the woman of his dreams (Priscilla Presley). But he is pressed back into action to infiltrate a group of terrorists who plan to blow up the Oscars. The filmmakers make hay with spoofs of prison films and, particularly, of the Oscars themselves, in an award-show send-up that includes such real-life stars as Raquel Welch and Pia Zadora–and Drebin being mistaken for Phil Donahue. The takeoff on the dreadful production numbers that always drag out the Academy Awards will have you howling. –Marshall Fine

It’s a Saturday morning in Montevideo, and Leche, Javi and Seba are still up from the night before, drinking beer and avoiding responsibility. The film follows these lazy compadres for 24 hours as they talk nonsense, encounter weird characters from the neighbourhood, and drift in a state of chronic boredom. The directors of this low-budget black-and-white flick are two Uruguayan buddies in their 20s who admit being influenced by Richard Linklater (SLACKER), Kevin Smith (CLERKS) and Jim Jarmusch (STRANGER THAN PARADISE). In spite of these precedents, audiences have been won over by the sly, goofy charms of 25 WATTS, which one critic praised for being as unpretentious as a 25-watt light bulb.

“I try very hard never to distort or dissemble,” says Mr. Neville (Anthony Higgins), a draughtsman of considerable talent contracted by a certain Mrs. Herbert (Janet Suzman) to make 12 drawings for her absent husband of their English estate. Part of that contract involves Mr. Neville taking his pleasure, and that pleasure is Mrs. Herbert. While Mr. Neville aims for fidelity in his drawings, infidelity in private is quite another matter. Then the film becomes a cerebral puzzle when objects start appearing mysteriously in the subjects of Mr. Neville’s various drawings: a ladder that wasn’t there before, a pair of boots standing in a field. Mr. Neville’s penchant for realism is stymied by these clues, which may or may not suggest the murder of Mr. Herbert. Peter Greenaway seems to have directed this, his first art-house success, with the aim of exploring the failings of perspective in art and casting his doubtful eye on the possibility of “faithful” drawings such as those by which Mr. Neville makes his living. Greenaway was, after all, an art student, and must have known that drawing machines like the one Mr. Neville uses in the film (which is set in 1694) led not only to the invention of photography, and therefore of film itself, but also to the renouncing of perspective that informs so much of 20th-century painting.

In the film, Greenaway overlays the story’s mysterious elements with highly mannered tableaux, making each scene like a realistic, though sumptuous, painting, while having his actors spout witty and complicated sentences. While this is very entertaining, it has a dual purpose, which is to depict the falseness of surfaces. Mr. Neville’s faith in the same is his downfall, and Greenaway’s triumph is in his distortions and dissemblings, the narrative lie that gets closer to the truth than any architectural drawing could. –Jim Gay
